HCA: Requesting Sign Language Interpreters

The Health Care Authority (HCA) recently sent the following alert to dental Medicaid providers.

New online form for requesting sign language interpreters

The Health Care Authority (HCA) has been partnering with the Office of Deaf and Hard of Hearing (ODHH) to better streamline requests for sign language interpreters for Apple Health (Medicaid) clients. ODHH will soon be implementing a new online form for providers to request a sign language interpreter on the ODHH website

Virtual sign language interpreters

Virtual interpreters are available. They are the ODHH-approved sign language interpreters who have traditionally attended appointments with employees and clients in-person. During the COVID-19 pandemic, ODHH has implemented a way for interpreters to continue working using state-approved platforms under the master contract for sign language interpreter referral services and independent contractors.

In order to request a virtual interpreter, you must document on the form: 

  • That the appointment needs to be conducted remotely
  • What program/application you will be using:
    • GoToMeeting, Zoom, Teams, etc.
In order for a successful virtual meeting, you and the interpreters must have the appropriate internet bandwidth to stay connected throughout the appointment.
